Spies and Secret Agents
Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2, titled "Top Secret," launched on February 20, 2020, and is widely regarded by the community as one of the greatest seasons in the game's history. The island was taken over by covert operatives belonging to two rival factions: GHOST and SHADOW. This season fundamentally changed PvE elements in Battle Royale by heavily populating specific POIs with AI Henchmen, security cameras, and automated turrets. Epic introduced a unique Battle Pass mechanic where players had to choose a permanent GHOST or SHADOW style for their outfits, with the community's overall choices actively altering the map's bases over time. Season 2 also introduced the massive "Astronomical" Travis Scott concert, breaking concurrent player records, and culminated in "The Device" live event where Midas attempted to defy the Storm itself. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the season experienced multiple extensions, ultimately running for 118 days.

Five new covert bases were added to the map: The Agency (center), The Yacht (northeast), The Shark (northwest), The Grotto (east), and The Rig (southwest). Over the season, these bases shifted allegiances between GHOST and SHADOW based on community Battle Pass choices, altering their visuals and the AI guards present.
How it played
Gameplay & Mechanics
AI Henchmen and Bosses were introduced to guard specific POIs. Defeating a Boss dropped a Mythic weapon and a Keycard used to open a Vault containing massive loot. Other mechanics included Shakedowns (to reveal enemy/chest locations), Disguise Booths (to fool AI), ID Scanners, and Secret Passages (teleporting via dumpsters and porta-potties).

Introduced highly powerful Mythic weapons tied to bosses: Midas' Drum Gun, Brutus' Minigun, Skye's Assault Rifle and Grappler, Meowscles' Peow Peow Rifle, and TNTina's Ka-Boom Bow. Other additions included the Decoy Grenade, Crash Pad, Proximity Mine, Creepin' Cardboard, and the Kingsman umbrella.

Battle Pass
The Battle Pass featured iconic agents: Midas, Meowscles, Brutus, Skye, TNTina, and Agent Peely. It also included Gear Specialist Maya, the first outfit that allowed players to permanently lock in millions of custom style combinations. The secret skin was Marvel's Deadpool, who eventually took over The Yacht.

The final act
Live Event / Finale
The Device. On June 15, 2020, Midas activated a massive Doomsday Device at The Agency to push back the Storm. Players were temporarily teleported to a first-person office in the "real world" (introducing Agent Jones). Back on the island, the Storm was temporarily replaced by a terrifying, massive wall of water (a tsunami) that completely enveloped the map.
