Worlds Collide

Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 5, titled "Worlds Collide," launched on July 12, 2018. Following the dramatic rocket launch at the end of Season 4, a massive rift cracked the sky. This anomaly caused items from the Fortnite island to disappear into the real world, while historical and real-world objects were transported into the game. Epic Games built massive hype leading into the season with a real-world Alternate Reality Game (ARG) that placed the Durrr Burger mascot in the actual California desert. The season brought the game's first major biome replacement, swapping the swampy Moisty Mire for a massive Desert environment. Gameplay became significantly faster with the introduction of environmental Rifts for quick aerial repositioning and the All Terrain Kart (ATK), the game's first multi-passenger vehicle. Towards the end of the season, a massive, mysterious purple cube (affectionately named "Kevin" by the community) spawned from a lightning strike in the desert. The Cube began a slow, weeks-long rolling journey across the map, burning runes into the ground, creating anti-gravity zones, and keeping players constantly engaged with the evolving live-world narrative.
