Spooky and Darkness
Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 6, titled "Darkness Rises," launched on September 27, 2018, leaning heavily into a spooky, Halloween-inspired aesthetic. Following the events of Season 5 where "Kevin" the Cube melted into Loot Lake, the new season opened with the Cube resurrecting and lifting the central island of the lake high into the sky. Throughout the season, this floating island slowly traversed the map, visiting the corrupted rune areas left behind during Season 5 and gathering power. To celebrate Halloween, Epic Games introduced the "Fortnitemares" event, which added PvE Cube Monsters to the core Battle Royale modes, marking the first time significant AI enemies were integrated into standard PvP matches. The season culminated in one of the game's most iconic and universally praised live events: The Butterfly Event. The Cube destabilized and exploded, teleporting all players into a mysterious, white dimensional void known as the "In-Between." Here, players interacted with a glowing rift butterfly before being transported back to the map, revealing a beautiful, peaceful new version of Loot Lake (temporarily renamed Leaky Lake). This event solidified Epic's ambition to create unprecedented, interactive live narrative experiences.

Loot Lake was transformed into Leaky Lake, initially featuring a massive whirlpool. The Loot Lake house was lifted into the sky on a floating island that moved around the map. Corrupted Areas appeared where the Cube previously left runes. An underground bunker was added beneath Wailing Woods, and a haunted castle ruin appeared above Haunted Hills.

Gameplay & Mechanics
Shadow Stones were added as a consumable in Corrupted Areas, allowing players to turn into a "Shadow Form" that granted invisibility while stationary and the ability to phase through walls. Pets were introduced as a new interactive Back Bling cosmetic type. The Fortnitemares event temporarily added AI Cube Monsters to standard modes.

The Quadcrasher was introduced as a two-seater vehicle designed with a massive plow to ram through player-built structures. Major weapon/item additions included the Quad Launcher, Six Shooter, Heavy Assault Rifle (AK), Fiend Hunter Crossbow, Balloons, Mounted Turret, and Dynamite.

Battle Pass
The 100-tier Battle Pass featured Halloween and fantasy-themed skins like DJ Yonder, Giddy-Up, Fable, Dusk, and Nightshade. The progressive skins were Calamity (Tier 1 cowgirl-to-vampire hunter) and Dire (Tier 100 human-to-werewolf). The secret 7-week unlockable skin was the robot A.I.M. (The Hunting Party).

Live Event / Finale
The Butterfly Event. On November 4, 2018, the Cube exploded, sending players into a pristine white dimension ("The In-Between"). A rift butterfly landed on the players' fingers, transporting them back to a newly transformed, peaceful Leaky Lake with a rainbow.
