Pirates and Volcanoes
Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 8, titled "X Marks the Spot," launched on February 28, 2019, introducing a massive pirate and jungle theme. Following the escape of The Prisoner at the end of Season 7, a colossal volcano erupted from the ground, entirely replacing the northeastern quadrant of the map. Epic Games famously offered the Season 8 Battle Pass entirely for free to any player who completed 13 "Overtime" challenges during the final weeks of Season 7—a strategic move widely seen as a response to the sudden, explosive launch of a rival game, Apex Legends. This season was heavily defined by the arrival of pirates, ninjas, and the introduction of Reboot Vans, which allowed players to revive fully eliminated teammates for the first time. The season also featured a major crossover with Marvel's Avengers: Endgame, bringing iconic superhero weapons into a dedicated Limited Time Mode. The storyline culminated in the incredible "Unvaulting" event. The mysterious vault under Loot Lake opened, transporting players to the In-Between dimension where they collectively voted to bring the Drum Gun back into the game. Upon returning to the island, players immediately witnessed the Volcano violently erupt, sending massive fireballs that completely destroyed Tilted Towers and Retail Row, and severely damaged Polar Peak.

The entire northeast corner of the map was replaced by a massive Jungle biome. Wailing Woods, Tomato Temple, and Lazy Links were removed. The new biome featured a massive, active Volcano, Lazy Lagoon (a pirate bay with a galleon), and Sunny Steps (Aztec-inspired pyramids). Pirate Camps were also scattered across the map.

Gameplay & Mechanics
Reboot Vans were introduced, fundamentally changing squad gameplay by allowing players to collect a dropped ""Reboot Card"" and revive fully eliminated teammates. Geysers provided environmental aerial mobility. Pirate Cannons allowed players to fire cannonballs or launch themselves across the map.

Major additions included the Flint-Knock Pistol, Buried Treasure maps (which led to legendary loot), Poison Dart Traps, the Boom Bow, and Shadow Bombs. The controversial X-4 Stormwing planes were vaulted.
Season rewards
Battle Pass
The 100-tier Battle Pass featured Blackheart (pirate) and Hybrid (dragon/ninja) as progressive Tier 1 skins. It also introduced Peely, the incredibly iconic banana outfit, alongside Sidewinder, Ember, Master Key, and Luxe (the first female Tier 100 outfit). The secret unlockable skin was Ruin.

Major Collaborations
Marvel (Avengers: Endgame) - A major Limited Time Mode where players fought as either Thanos and his Chitauri army, or heroes wielding Captain America's Shield, Iron Man's Repulsors, Thor's Stormbreaker, and Hawkeye's Bow.

The final act
Live Event / Finale
The Unvaulting and Volcano Eruption. On May 4, 2019, players entered the Loot Lake vault to vote for an unvaulted item (the Drum Gun won). Upon exiting, the Volcano erupted, completely obliterating Tilted Towers, destroying Retail Row, and cracking the iceberg at Polar Peak.
